Description

Watercolor. Re-posting and modified version of a scene from AU Thorki fan fiction The Investigation by Justfollowthebunny. I just saw too many incongruities with my first version. Thank you for the previous favs.

with all the back and forth email we've been doing I thought maybe it's time to get back to basics with a nice long winded comment to cheer you :)

With one your more recent painting, "Contemplation" this give even more gravity to this piece; I love the sense of continuity in your work, is it deliberate or serendipity? You could almost call this one "The Beginning" because you can see that they are much closer to each other, very nearly making casual or unconscious connection that is a universal sign of comfort and familiarity with someone. But it hasn't here, there is that tiny little gap between their arms meaning something isn't right between them. This can be seen the easiest in Loki who is looking down from the attempt at eye contact that could mean discomfort, deceit, or submission along with with a defensive placement of his arms; crossing an arm over the body is a universal guarding signal. But what got me is something I actually missed, his mouth slightly open like he wants to speak but can't quite get it out, coupled with the defensive position it can mean only one thing: There is a wall going up. And though he might not know it, Thor isn't helping. While eye contact is a cultural in most Western socialites, it starts conversation and is a sign that you're paying attention to someone but prolonged, overly-presistant eye contact becomes staring and is actually an intimidation tactic. Granted I don't think that's the case here as his gaze is coupled with half-lidded, soft 'doe eyes' or 'bedroom eyes' as their also known as that look is often a sign of desire, sexual or otherwise.
In "Contemplation", if I can think of it as a continuation of this situation, you can see that the gap between them has widened to the point alienation; if you use the line the pillows are making in both as a boundary point in this piece while they may not be touching they are still in one another's personal space while in the later piece they have both drawn back into it. It can even be seen in the coloring of the two pieces that the situation is getting more tense, the soft lavender of this piece is calm and soothing not just because of the color but the lavender plant is famous for it soothing fragrance which is why the color would be associated with a calmer situation. "Contemplation" is much more striking with its bright goldenrod color making the situation more urgent.
And can I wrap this up by saying how much inborn talent this all takes, purposeful or accidental? Huggle!
